Original Poems About Mexico
I started writing these poems about Mexico on my first trip there in April of 2023. Visiting family in a small pueblo in the state of Guanajuato, I was immediately smitten with the landscape, architecture, food, and (mostly) the people.
Mexico is so diverse in each of those things, and each bend of the road–or corner turned in the city–is an adventure of sensation and culture.

1.
There is dust
and there is concrete
but there are people
and sunshine
and good food
and with those
you cannot taste the dust
2.
Iramuco
with its great lake
sits like amethyst
upon those steep
dry mountains
3.
Venus like a lover
perched over the dry valley
his eye twinkles fondly
lovers all night dally
4.
Ebbing and flowing
the colors of Iramuco
I’m taken out of myself
with each turn
and every bend
5.
Joy toils in the desert
where children are not spoiled
yet lack only want
and where cactus hills
have never heard
an ungracious thought.
6.
Acámbaro
its red and gold temple
you can’t wait to go in
but you can’t wait to come out
to see Acámbaro
7.
Hymns of Iramuco:
birdsong and sunshine smiling
the words of grateful people
Creation’s blessings piling
8.
Jacaranda
told me
there is nothing so royal
as Creation
and warmed by the sun
I agreed
happy beneath her boughs
